What it is like to Work at DataGPT?
A Huge Challenge
In our mission to automate data analysis, we're doing something that's never been done before. Every day we find ourselves in uncharted waters.
What's more, this innovation lies at the intersection of computer science, data science, and product development. Our success lies in being able to marry all three into something incredibly simple.
In order to solve this problem, we're dealing with difficult to grasp, abstract concepts. Many of these concepts are unique to DataGPT, built by us from first principles.
⛰️ You should join if:
You are undaunted by challenge and unfazed by failure. You can quickly learn and easily visualize abstract concepts. You have too many ideas and are wicked fast at testing those hypotheses.
Completely Remote
Remote is great. Done right, it makes building a happy, productive team even easier. At DataGPT we've mastered remote work, and we're all really happy doing it.
Here are some of the many benefits we experience being remote:
- No commute – reclaim hours per day
- No distractions – easy to do deep work
- Easy to take breaks – we'll go on walks or nap during the day
- Flexible schedule – work when you are most productive. If that's early morning, late at night, you do you!
- International, diverse team – we're hiring people from cultures across the world
- Automatic paper trail – good use of remote tools means it's easy to find old conversations and decisions.
- Perfect setup – customize your work setup however you want.
And fully remote doesn't mean we don't see each other. We'll regularly meet for drinks and team activities and have fun together. And while remote, we still have fun. We all meet first thing in the morning for a scrum, where we share our "grateful thought" and spend some time teasing one another and laughing.

You love working remotely, and all the benefits that are included with it. You're comfortable managing your own pace and schedule. And most importantly you're fantastic and keeping organized, structured well documented written communication.
Lots of Wonderful Arguments
We only hire people who are intellectually rigorous. People who care deeply about finding the truth. People who back up their arguments with data and experiments. People who are intellectually rigorous spend more time asking questions than offering opinions and are excited to be told they are wrong because it means they have learned something new.
We also only hire people who are effective communicators. To build on others' ideas constructively, you have to be able to clearly articulate the flaws in them. This means being able to speak simply and concisely about difficult abstract ideas.
Finally, we hire people who are kind. Having a lot of passionate people with strong ideas occasionally means things can get heated. But it works because we trust each other, we have fun together and we never take things too seriously. No matter how involved our arguments get, we'll be laughing together the next second.
The combination of these three things – intellectual rigor, articulate communication, and kindness, means that we have wonderful arguments and tear through difficult problems.

You're kind, caring, and don't take yourself too seriously. You're a fantastic communicator and can clearly and concisely communicate abstract concepts in computer science and data science. People never have trouble understanding you. You're intellectually rigorous and care deeply about objectively finding the truth, at the expense of your own opinions and ideas. You're excited to have wonderful arguments.
Fast-Paced, Customer Driven Development
Talking about and solving difficult problems is great, but in isolation is meaningless. We must first make sure we are solving the right problem, and that our solution is the right solution.
There is only one way to do this, which is to talk to customers. Everyone working on the product can attend customer meetings and hear their direct feedback. This provides foundational context for solving difficult problems.
We do this on a weekly basis. We'll deliver reports to customers and get their feedback and interrogate them about how we can make things better. We want to understand their thinking more deeply than they do, so we can over-deliver.
This means we have a bias for shipping. We need to have meaningful improvements to show our customers every week, and so we merge a lot of PRs.
🚀 You should join if:
You are anxious to get your code in the customer's hands. You're eager to get feedback. By default, you tend to move quickly and are constantly shipping quality products.
Obsession with our Craft
On a daily basis we are asking for a lot of feedback. Whether that's in PRs, proposals, or just socialize ideas while brainstorming – we're constantly trying to get help improving our craft.
Because we love what we do, we work hard. We don't work hard because we have to, but because we get to. We're so excited by the problems we get to solve that we think about them as we fall asleep and first thing when we wake up.
👩💻 You should join if:
You love learning and working hard because you're obsessed with mastering your craft. You'll always be tinkering – looking for new things to learn, contribute to open source, try new languages, and generally staying on top of everything in your field. You ask for help constantly, despite already being an expert in your field just because you want to push yourself to the next level.
We Sweat the Small Stuff
There are only a few of us at DataGPT, but together we get to achieve an outsized amount. This means we get work directly on root problems and architect solutions together. There is a lot that needs to be done and we're each willing to roll up our sleeves and do it.
This means that we embrace the small stuff. We don't mind manually creating reports, hiring, bug fixing, putting out fires, writing tests, talking to customers, writing documentation. We do things that don't scale because it gets us closer to our goals. We'll put extra effort into the mundane to make things a little bit easier for the next person to touch the problem.
There is no task too small. If there is something that needs to be done we jump on it, without hesitation.
🔎 You should join if:
You care about shipping and hitting your goals more than you care about what you do to get there. You love working on difficult problems and realize that sometimes that means volunteering to help out on trivial stuff. You put just as much effort into the mundane as the profound, and approach all your work with the same sense of gratitude. You love the process.
Rest and Recover
There seems to be some myth in modern professional life that humans can work relentlessly, every day without ever stopping.
At DataGPT, we love resting. We love sleep. We love vacation. We take breaks during the day to take a walk in the sun or take a nap. We take personal days when we feel sick or tired. We take vacation regularly.
We realize that resting like this is the foundation for high-performing mental work. Athletes prioritize their sleep as one of the building blocks of their training because without it all of their training is going to waste. The way we look at it, we are mental athletes and some good old R&R is essential to take our performance to the next level.
At DataGPT we offer unlimited paid vacation, personal days, as well as 1 week break over Christmas.
